Visiting the chapel of rest
What a visit is like, who can come, and how to arrange one.

You are welcome to visit your loved one before the funeral. Visits are arranged by appointment at either branch, giving you private time together.
Some families find visiting the chapel of rest helpful, while others prefer not to. There is no right or wrong choice, and we will support whichever feels right for you.
Our chapels of rest
- Fulwell: Three private chapels of rest.
- Grindon: Three private chapels of rest.
- Each chapel provides a private space for you and your family to spend time with your loved one.

Who comes, and for how long, is up to you
When arranging your visit, let us know who will be attending and how much time you would like. We can also arrange further visits if you wish to return.
Children are welcome to visit, and we can help you consider how best to prepare them for the experience. Read our guidance on children visiting the chapel of rest.
What you can bring
You are welcome to bring letters, photographs, cards or other meaningful items to share with your loved one during your visit.
Please speak to us before placing anything in the coffin, particularly if it is intended to remain there for burial or cremation. Some items are restricted, especially for cremation, and we will explain what is permitted.
Embalming is optional and we will explain it
Embalming is a specialist preparation process that helps preserve your loved one’s appearance for a period of time.
Embalming is optional and is not required for every funeral. We will explain whether it may be beneficial in your circumstances so you can make an informed decision.
Embalming is an additional service, and the cost is shown in our Additional Options Price List.
