Burial
Information about arranging a burial, including cemetery options, burial arrangements and associated fees.
A burial is a funeral service followed by the coffin being laid to rest in a grave.
Most of the families we look after choose a cemetery in Sunderland or South Tyneside. The cemetery charges its own fees, separate from ours.
What a burial costs
- Adds £245Burial with a service
- Adds £880Burial without a service
The cemetery or interment fee is separate and will depend on the cemetery and arrangements chosen. You pay three parts: our funeral price, our burial charge and the cemetery’s own charges.
For reference, from 1 November 2026, Sunderland City Council charges £1,381 for the burial itself and £1,381 for the exclusive right of burial in an adult grave.
These are separate charges. For a new grave, both charges apply.
The exclusive right of burial is the right to decide who may be buried in the grave.
Cemetery fees are set by the council
Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council each publish their own cemetery fees. If you are considering a cemetery in County Durham, we will find out the current fees from Durham County Council for you.
