Repatriation

Support and guidance when bringing a loved one home from abroad or arranging for their return to another country.

Repatriation means bringing someone home to England after they have died abroad, or taking someone who has died in England to another country. We can arrange either.

You do not need to arrange the repatriation yourself. Call us and we will explain what needs to happen and deal with the arrangements for you.

Bringing someone home to England

There are several things that need to be arranged before the person can travel. A coroner is an independent judicial officer who investigates certain deaths, including those that are sudden, unexpected or unexplained.

  1. A certified English translation of the death certificate.
  2. Permission to take the person out of the country, where this is required by the local authorities.
  3. Notice to a coroner in England or Wales, if the cause of death was unknown, violent or unnatural.

You must also register the death with the authorities in the country where the person died.

Tell Us Once is the government service that reports a death across departments. It can be used if the person usually lived in England, Scotland or Wales and was abroad temporarily. The register office may ask you to have the foreign death certificate verified first.

Taking someone out of England

The coroner for the area where the person is being looked after must be notified. We can do this for you.

There is normally a waiting period of four clear days after the coroner has received the notice, although the person may be able to leave sooner if the coroner acknowledges the notice earlier.

The Sunderland coroner’s office has an out-of-hours service for urgent requests of this kind. Contact the coroner’s office

What it costs

Repatriation is priced individually because the cost depends on the country, the airline and the requirements of the authorities involved. We will explain the costs before arrangements are made.
